Types of Stamps: Revenue Stamps

Revenue Stamps are stamps that are affixed to documents, spirits, stock certificates, playing cards, tobacco, etc. to show that the required government tax has been paid. The revenue stamp illustrated on the left was issued from 1862 to 1871 in various formats to cover the tax on conveyance, entry of goods, foreign exchange, inland exchange, lease, life insurance, manifest, mortgage, power of attorney, etc.

Pictured at the left is the bottom half of the last page of a New Jersey deed of sale with revenue stamps affixed and dated 1866.
